Hotel star ratings are a way of measuring the quality and value of hotel accommodations and their amenities. They also serve by providing guidelines to guests who are making hotel reservations. Although star rating systems are helpful when booking rooms, the system has in no way been standardized. In the US, for example, hotels are ranked on a scale of one to five, for example, with five stars being the highest possible rating. In Europe, on the other hand, hotels are ranked on a scale of one to four stars. Ratings can also vary greatly from country to country, city to city, and even between hotels in the same city. It comes as no surprise then, that most people never really know what they’re going to get unless they’re booking a room with a well-known hotel chain.

In 2004, the Hotelstars Union, which was established in Europe,  took a step forward in revolutionizing the way hotels are classified throughout Europe and the surrounding area. Today, over a dozen countries in Europe have standardized their criteria for hotel ratings and by mid-2012, the concept will be applied in countries all over Europe.
